I was just going over the names in your Roster and noticed one important name was missing. His name was: DUANE C. BOWMAN. He was a Seaman, served aboard the Twining from 1943 - 1945. He and his twin brother, Wayne Bowman served together. Duane's duties were in the fireroom, boilers below deck. He never really spoke too much to us about his war days, but always spoke fondly of his shipmates and shared the few photos he had of them while in Pearl.Duane and I were married December 31, 1965...He was 18 years my senior, although you never (knew) it because he was a fit man. Took good care of himself and he was such a clean man. I was always so proud of him. Always the gentleman. A wonderful husband and father. We had 4 great kids. Three boys (twins) and at last a little girl...the sunshine in her pappy's eyes. After all he went through during those terrible years and he came back home to his family and friends without a scratch...cancer took him June 23, 1987. He passed away in my arms and our last words to each other were "I love you," and with that he went to sleep. To me it was the best marriage in the world and to this day I miss him very much. So, in honor of this wonderful man and best husband and friend a girl could ever ask for, I write you this letter and hope the next time I look at the Roster I will see his name.Thank you very much!

BRANNON, Lon 8 Dec, 2004
My brother, Lon passed away on the 8th of December 2004. And unfortunately the only picture of him during that time[Twining era] is a very small picture which I am enclosing as an attachment. I can tell you that he was very proud of the Twining and his time aboard her. He was on the Curtis (a seaplane tender) and transferred from there to the Twining because he wanted to be on a destroyer and spent the majority of his Naval service on the Twining. He had a natural swagger and that continued right up till he finally passed away.
BRIGHTON, Chester L. 1990 (Twining time frame unknown)
Chester L. Brighton was born April 23, 1916, in Leland, Iowa, to James and Rose Brighton. Whenever farm chores permitted, he enjoyed baseball with his 12 siblings and nearby neighbors. Mr. Brighton left home at a * age to work in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
Mr. Brighton joined the Navy in 1937. His first duty was aboard the USS Tuscaloosa (CL37). In 1938, he joined the plank owner’s crew of the USS Helena (CL50). Petty Officer Brighton was aboard the Helena when she was torpedoed during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He was among the damage control crews that restored power to the gun batteries so the Helena could fight off the attack.
After repairs stateside, the Helena returned to the Pacific theatre to participate in the battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands where she sank four Japanese heavy ships. At the battle of Kula Gulf, while providing support for a night landing of Marines, the Helena, hit by three torpedoes, began to sink. Mr. Brighton went over the side with the remaining survivors. At daybreak, he was the last man rescued by a destroyer.
He also served onboard the USS Sierra (AD18), USS Twining (DD540) and the USS Jason (AR8).
Chief Brighton was a member of the fire department at Naval Air Station Miramar and trained recruits at Naval Training Center San Diego. His platoons won many awards for excellence.
After retirement in 1960, Chief Brighton worked at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company in San Diego where he supervised construction crews.
Until his death in 1990, Chester resided in La Mesa, CA, with his wife of 48 years Inez (McKenzie). He has two children: twins, Catherine, married to Hugh Yarbrough, and Carleton, married to Jean (Heim). He has two grandsons Todd and Kevin Brighton and four granddaughters, Julie Brighton, Cynthia (Yarbrough) Sieradski, Cheryl (Yarbrough) Hammel, and Caryn (Yarbrough) Staib. Chester has four great grandsons: Chase and Trey Sieradski, and Dayton and Blake Hammel.

COLVIN, Marvin Aug 15, 2005
I am sorry to have to let you know that our father, Marvin Lewis Colvin, passed away at midnight on August 15/16, 2005. He was very ill with COPD and he is now at peace and able to breathe again! He is buried in Littleton, Colorado in Chapel Hill Cemetary. His funeral was yesterday on August 20, 2005. My sister and I would appreciate any stories you or others might have about our father from the war or the reunions. I must tell you that any information his wife has will never be given to us and we need to hear the real stories from his friends.Do you know of any models of the USS Twining that we might be able to purchase? Please let us know of any such items. We both have children that would love to be able to hear the stories of their Grandfather.Thank you so much for your time. Any information you might be able to share will certainly help us at this sorrowful time in our lives. I am not sure he ever spoke of his three daughters at the reunions, but we loved him dearly and need these things.
Respectively,

I think he might have gotten his ace in the Marianas Turkey shoot while his brother
Glenn was on the Twining. Glenn Hippe died in an auto accident about 1950.

17 Dec 2009 - Hi Glenn,
I was looking at The Idaho Statesmans Obituaries (this early hour of the morning), and noticed the Navy Uniform with Arvel Rudolph; which always reminds me of my Father Bill Kauphusman serving in WWII aboard the USS Twining DD540! In reading the obituary, I discovered Arvel Rudolph was a mate of Dad's, and thought to let you know of Arvel's passing. I don't quite remember if Dad Bill and Arvel knew of the close proxsimity, of their living within 160 Miles of each other, prior to their inlisting into the Navy; with Arvel living within 1/2 a mile from my Wife and I; before we moved back into my Family's home we grew up in Boise, Idaho. I'll have to ask Mom Rosemary: "If Dad Bill and Arvel had any connection; since the Rudolph's move to Boise in 1967?"
Take Care! Merry Christmas!
Bill Kauphusman
Here's his obituary
Arvel Rudolph, 83 passed away at a Boise care facility on Tuesday, December 15, 2009 surrounded by his family.
He was born January 19, 1926 at Mapleton Utah, the son of Archie Milton Rudolph and Inez Perry Rudolph. He was the first son, and one of nine children. He was discharged from the Navy in 1945. and in 1946, he met the love of his life, Norma Shepard. They were married in 1947 in Burley, Idaho. Arvel spent his entire working career as a master carpenter. In 1967, he moved to Boise to become a building supervisor for Hon Construction Co.. This work allowed him the opportunity of building in Everett, Washington, Sun Valley, Cascade and Boise. He was preceded in death by his parents Archie and Inez, and brother Jim. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Norma; sons Rick and wife Jan Rudolph, Martinez, Ca., Layne and wife Cheryl, Boise, daughter Kara and husband Jack Lewis, Nampa, Idaho, six grandchildren, and six great grandchildren; sisters Maxine Twedt, Lancaster, California, Bernyce Kalblinger, Nampa, Opal Wilcox, Twin Falls, Dixie Montgomery, Boise and brothers Perry Rudolph, Placerville, Ca., Reid Rudolph, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Riece Rudolph, Burley . HI,
My name is Valerie Talley and my father, William (Bill or Billy) Allison served on board the Twining from 1954-1959. He passed away April 5, 2011. I would like to add him to the list on the Twining, please. He talked fondly of his time on board. The picture of the ship, leaving San Diego in 1958, on the website was taken at the time when he would have been on board.
Thank you for having such a great website for the sailors who served on the Twining. Please, feel free to contact me for more information on my father.

CALOGERO, Frank 12 Sept. 1982
After a recent visit with my grandmother looking at old pictures, we came across my grandfather's discharge papers from the Navy. His name was Frank A. Calogero. After serving in the Navy from 1942-1946, he was reactivated in January 1950. According to his discharge papers dated in 1952, he served on the USS Twining during the Korean Conflict. I was very intrigued by your website devoted to the ship and would like to add my grandfather's name to your roster of the fine men who served on this vessel. I could probably comb over all of his papers again and give you more details if necessary. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away on September 12, 1982 in Cleveland, Ohio where he was born and raised. I don't know how many of his shipmates are still around or are familiar with your website, but it would be fantastic if someone remembered him personally and had any stories they could share about serving side by side with him. Perhaps you have the resources to find this information out. Thank you for all of the information you have provided on your site and thank you further for keeping all of the memories of these great men and this ship alive.
Thank you,

DUNCAN, Joe Oct 15, 2009
Ruby Lee (Weaver) Daniel Funeral services for Joe Duncan, 78, Pryor, Ok. are Monday, Oct. 19, 2009, 2 p.m., at First Church of God. The Rev. Wade Markham and the Rev. Andrew Rehbein will officiate and burial will follow at Graham Memorial Cemetery. Services are entrusted to Stephens Memorial Chapel. Duncan was born Oct. 31, 1930, in Alluwe, to Jack and Maude (Fields) Duncan. He died Oct. 15, in Claremore at the age of 78 years 11 months and 15 days. Duncan attended grade school in Keystone and high school in Pryor.
He was a veteran of the Korean War serving with the United States Navy on the USS Twining DD540.
He lived in Pryor since 1941. He was married to Virginia Fisher on March 16, 1952, in Yuma, Ariz.; she preceded him in
death on March 26, 2000. He was one of a few real “cowboys” left. He had cowboyed for Gooldy Ranch, Pryor, McFarland- Ingersoll Ranch in Tiawah, Bonnard Ranch in Osage County and for Billy Montgomery. He and his long time friend and and partner, Kelly Gentry, did a lot of cowboying. He always had a good eye for livestock; he raised Brangus Cattle, Hereford Cattle and Quarter Horses. He owned winning horses in every category from racehorses to performance horses and he always had a good horse to ride. There were two things that Duncan said he would never loan; one was his horse and the other was his toothbrush. Duncan was always there to help anyone, whether it was working cattle or gathering up a stray bull or heifer that had gotten out. He never
met a stranger and he always had a story to tell and he was very good at it. He loved animals and he was never with- out a dog and loved it to the end. He was an avid OU fan, especially the Bud Wilkinson era. His grandchildren meant everything to him. He was so proud of all of them. He was always there to support them in there differ- ent sports over the years. Duncan is survived by daughter Jennifer Finney and husband Bud of Pryor, son Mike Duncan of Pryor; grandchildren Amber and Kyle Elam, Tanner Finney, Taylar and Oliver Odle and Andy Finney; great-grand chil- dren Paige Elam and Bodie Elam. In addition to his wife, Virginia, he was preceded in death by his parents, siblings Edna, Elmer, Ivalee, Jack, Jr., Pep and Howard. In lieu of other remem- brances donations can be made to any veterans sup- port group or Humane Society. The family will receive relatives and friends
today from 2 to 4 p.m., at Stephens Memorial Chapel. To sign his “Memory Book” at www.stephens- memorialchapel.comDUNN, Charles 1992

Terry Huff passed away the 16th august and left a wife Grace and his 6 children and grandchildren.
Please, can you also now add Terry Huff to your Honor List? He was the best man among many of a man and I, as a friend, loved him dearly. He was in Korea.Terry served with VF-194 from July 1950, through the end of 1952, as a plane captain, and later as a parachute rigger. Was aboard when he and his squadron chose the squadron emblem, a yellow devil, with a spade for background, holding .50 cal machine guns, rockets, and belts of ammo. They chose it from several emblems that had been given for consideration. Back in the early days, they had slot machines in their line shack.
Those are Terry words and he was a very good man.
Please, put Terry Huff in your Honor List.

My dad served aboard the USS Twining from I think 1951-1955. My dad was Don Truesdell. My dad was so proud of his time spent in the military. My biggest regret is that I didn't ask him to tell me more about his time served during this era. He passed away in March 2003. I was so close to him and I think of him everyday. I loved him so much. I have some pictures of the Twining and several group pictures. You can't believe how I feel since I found this link to other men that were on the Twining. I would love to hear from any of you to just talk about your memories. Like I said, my dad was so precious to me and I miss him so much. A piece of me died the day he died. WALDROP, Bill "BILLY JOE" KE 4 Feb. 2011Thank you for your invitation to the reunion. I did want to let you know that my dad, Kennith M. Walker, 106 Co. Rd. 3820, Arley, AL 35541, passed away June 13, 2005. He died from Pulmonary Fibrosis - the dr's. said it was not asbestos related. Please encourage all of your shipmates to be tested for asbestos as the ship has been noted to have lots of problems in that area. They may be entitled to compensation from the V.A. Daddy could have had some sort of pension if he had only knew to apply for it and mother could have been taken care of financially had he done so. But after death, there is NOTHING! (We found all this out when we went to the V.A. just to get a flag for the casket.)
Greetings to whomever may read this. This email is to inform the site that Seaman 1st Class Billy Joe Waldrop, passed away Friday, February 4, 2011, after a hard fought battle with cancer. He was 78. Billy Joe served aboard the Twining from 1951 to 1955. He is survived by his wife Norma. Billy Joe was Navy through and through and could not have been more proud to serve aboard the Twining as a "Tin Can Sailor". He will be deeply missed.
Thank you for your time and God bless.Best regards,

WHITE, Leonard J. June 16, 2006
My dad, Leonard J.White, GM3rd class passed away on June 16, 2006 at St. Vincents Hospital in Worcester, Ma. He was classified as 100% disabled by the VA and had been a resident in a VA contract home for the past six years. Dad had a picture of the Twining on his bookcase along with pictures of him and some shipmates. He was very proud of his ship and mates. Dad kept the residents and nurses intertained with some of his stories. We ran into a doctor who served on one of the carriers that the Twining escorted in the Pacific. We had a military funeral with members of the USN in their dress whites. Everyone there was very proud when they saw his ribbons and medals at the wake, dad also had a Navy casket. If you look up military caskets on the internet you can see what the casket looked like. There were quite a few of my friends there also who are veterans and we all would like to have military caskets when it is our time to go. I do not have Bruno's address but I have written letters to him in the past. If you have it would you please send it to me as he is the person that I have been ordering Twining hats, shirts and sweatshirts from. My dads great grandsons would like some Twining hats. I have one that I keep over the flag that was on the casket in my home and one that I wear very proudly. I have also sent donations in the past to Bruno for the association and I would like to continue doing so. Hope to hear from you soon.

BALLEW, Jesse J. 11-27-2002
Dear Mr. Robbins, I happened across your site while doing a search for "USS Twining Ballew".
My dad, Jesse J. Ballew, had fond memories of his time on that particular ship. He retired in 1985 as an OSCM with 31 years in the Navy. After which, he worked as a civil servant in the Department of the Navy until 1999. In 1999 or 2000, he and my mom attended a USS Twining Reunion. He passed away on November 27, 2002. I hope that this information is useful, especially to Bruno Campagnari from New York, who he kept in touch with, and other shipmates who may be wondering what has happened to him since.
Respectfully,Trish J. Ballew
